California ricelands serve as restaurants, rest stops and even incubators for a significant number of wildlife species in our region. Ducks, geese and shorebirds by the millions rest, feed and rear their young in rice fields during their annual migrations. Most recently, the well-respected Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences designated the Sacramento Valley as Shorebird Habitat of International Significance. Most of the acres designated are composed of California ricelands.
Rice farmers, who have long been dedicated to nurturing wildlife, continue to work with local, state and federal wildlife experts. They are dedicated to ensuring that where there are California ricelands, there are also abundant resources for species that have become dependent on the environment that growing rice has helped to create.
