What to Look for When Buying Rice

California family farmers and millers are dedicated to providing their customers with premium rice. That is why our industry focuses on quality from seed to harvest.

Additionally, the U.S Department of Agriculture has established basic standards to measure rice quality that is based on uniformity, appearance, color, cleanliness, milling yield, and cooking and processing characteristics. When buying rice it is typical to see it in terms USDA No. 1 which is the highest grade given and is a common label use on packaging of rice.

To learn more about grading, below are tables that have been reproduced from the USDA's Grain Inspection Service publication "United States Standards for Rice," that were last revised January 2002.
